Lactase is the enzyme that breaks down the lactose protein that dairy intolerant people can’t digest. Lactase pills are big business in the USA but only health food stores carry them in this country. They’re not very cheap, and most brands require you to take 2 to 3 pills in one go to combat the effects of the dairy. Insisting on a dairy rich diet will get very expensive very quickly if you choose to take lactase.
Judging the correct dosage is also a little tricky. Exactly how much lactase to take is a trial and error process and in the mean time you are suffering symptoms.
However, there is no known case of overdosing on lactase. Most dairy intolerant people agree that taking lactase is not a convenient way to manage symptoms. The best way is to avoid dairy altogether. However, to relieve symptoms should you eat dairy by mistake, especially if your intolerance is a bad one, then lactase really can help.
Most dairy intolerant people agree that being unable to digest milk has forced a lifestyle change upon them. They are reading labels, watching what they eat more closely and turning to home cooking rather than pre-prepared manufactured foods. They are noticing dairy intolerances in others and recognising the effects of a dairy heavy diet. With more and more choice from manufacturers recognising the need for dairy free alternatives there is no need to feel left out of western, modern cuisine, it just requires a little more thought.
